We’ll pick you up at 4:30 AM from your hotel in Cusco, anywhere near the city center (hotels, Airbnbs, apartments, or hostels), and take you on a 3-hour drive to the trailhead. Upon arrival, our chef will prepare a delicious breakfast with a variety of options for the whole group. You’ll have time to admire the surrounding mountain scenery while enjoying a cup of coffee or coca tea, preparing for the 5,000-meter hike ahead.
After breakfast, we’ll begin the 2-hour hike to the summit of Vinicunca Mountain (also known as Rainbow Mountain). The trail is a gradual climb with a steep incline in the final section before reaching the summit, which is over 5,000 meters high. Hike through the snow-capped peaks of the Ausangate mountain range, the highest mountain in the Cusco region. Along the way, you’ll encounter hundreds of llamas and alpacas. Each meter we climb brings us closer to the summit, with a panorama more breathtaking than the last.
You’ll need a warm jacket, hat, gloves, and a good camera to capture the stunning views during this trip. The temperature will be very low at the top, so you’ll need appropriate clothing.
At the summit, your tour guide will explain the origin of the colorful hills, the Andes Mountains, and the significance of this mountain to the indigenous people of the area.
After enjoying the fantastic landscapes of the Peruvian Andes and the summit of Vinicunca, which offers a breathtaking panorama in every direction, we’ll continue our journey with a 30-minute hike to the Red Valley, an area rarely visited by tourists due to its remote location. Here you’ll find stunning scenery that will leave you speechless.
We’ll return to the trailhead; the hike is approximately one hour downhill, where our special picnic lunch will be waiting for us. After lunch, we’ll board the bus back to Cusco, arriving around 5:30 p.m. Our chefs will prepare the finest traditional Peruvian dishes using fresh, local ingredients from the surrounding areas.
Schedules are approximate, as they depend on weather conditions, walking speed, and many other external factors.
The tour usually starts very early, between 4:00 and 5:00 AM, with pickup from your hotel in Cusco. Then you'll travel to the starting point of the hike.
The hike is moderately difficult due to the altitude (over 5,000 meters above sea level). It is recommended to acclimatize for at least 1 or 2 days in Cusco before undertaking the tour.
The hike to Rainbow Mountain typically takes between 1.5 and 2 hours. After visiting the viewpoint, you continue to Red Valley, which can take an additional 30 to 40 minutes.
We recommend bringing warm clothing, a waterproof jacket, hiking boots, water, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and cash for entrance fees or horseback riding.
Yes, along the route there are local residents who offer horse rentals to help with part of the climb to Rainbow Mountain.
